Truck Driver Card
Friday, May 20, 2011 @ 3:11 PM 0 comments!

Already making a Father's Day Card - but for good reason.  A friend lives out of town and I wanted them to not have to dig around for a card this coming Father's Day.

Their dad is a truck driver of a big rig!   So I approached this in a novel way.....first I downloaded an image of a big rig from a colouring book site {see below}.  Yes - these are for the little ones to colour!  But then - I printed the image and cut a border around it AND then drew in some basic scenery!

Here is a downloaded image - close to the one I used - from a coloring book website.
"google" your subject - be sure to add the word 'image' so: "big rig image" is how I searched for mine and then click on IMAGES in the upper left side of Google's page - and you will see tons of images to choose from, look for a colouring image, not a photo picture - and you're done!  Right Click on image and select "Save Image" - you will then find the image in your saved picture files - mine shows up under 'Recently Changed'.  Select it and choose Print.

Stampin' Up's AQUA PAINTER BRUSH did the next trick, along with our WATERCOLOUR PENCILS!

I sketched some colour in to the various areas - nothing fancy, as I love to use a painting technique where colouring in the lines is not required!  The looser your technique - the better!

Once coloured - I "prepped" the Aqua Painter Brush by tapping and squeezing til water wets the actual bristles of the brush {you'll see a drop of water emerge}......and then I lightly went over the coloured areas, creating a watercolour effect as I went along.  Very easy to do!

CLICK on picture to see CLOSE-UP.

I layered the painted piece onto cardstocks, and made a few additional ACCENTS!   The COMPASS STAMP is from one of our more recent stamp sets and the CIRCLEs are from our 1 Inch Punch with our SILVER BRADS.

---------------

TIP - it is much better to "stamp" an image in one of our water-resistant inks {Basic Gray, Basic Black or even Stazon Ink} - but in a pinch, be careful to avoid smearing the ink of the image with the water.  Not that hard, and a light smearing is fine - don't panic!  Cuz what is the rule of hand-made?  THERE ARE NO MISTAKES!

Thanks for stopping by!

Valentine Card - doesn't have to be PiNk!
Saturday, February 12, 2011 @ 12:32 PM 0 comments!

No, no, no....it doesn't!

It's all about your own style - and here is one I made while experimenting with a technique.

I wanted to a) emboss and b) colour with embossed surfaces.

So I chose to:
1) ink my VERY VANILLA cardstock with all sorts of ink colours using SPONGES.
2)then I EMBOSSED my coloured and cut 4-1/4x5 inch rectangle cardstock using an EMBOSSING FOLDER where I sandwiched the cardstock and pressed it through my BIG SHOT DIE-CUTTING and EMBOSSING MACHINE.
3) now I used a separate sponge to ink over the entire piece with BLACK ink - quickly and lightly!  This colours the "raised surface" created by the embossing folder.  To get a more precise ink effect, I could of used my brayer tool.

Now, I punched out a black HEART with my Heart PUNCH, and a blue circle with my 1 inch CIRCLE punch and attached them with a black flower BRAD.

Chipboard Accent Update - My Daughter Made a Valentine!
@ 12:19 PM 0 comments!

However amazing on her part....its not for me!  I'd like to see the results of a poll of crafters who have kin living with them, children no less...who will not craft much!  Honestly, she will on occasion - but ironically, I can not expect a card - she tells me she does 3 per year, that's her limit! LOL!

But - if not for Mom, then she doesn't mind to hit my craft studio and go crazy. And when she does, I love her style!

Here is my chipboard accent (please see Feb 3rd post).....on a card she made for a friend!

My daughter's card she made as a Valentine for a friend.

Told ya she was talented, oxox!

Supplies: Stampin' Up! Basic Grey Pattern Paper(striped, dots), Rose Red and Pretty in Pink (2nd layer and inside) cardstock, Vellum specialty paper,  Love You Much stamp (heart), Heart Punch, XL Flower Punch (inside grey flower).  Misc:  Heart Border Punch (Fiskars), pale pink ribbon.

Valentines Heart Punch Card and Busy Patterns Technique
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 @ 7:14 PM 0 comments!

Helloooo.....been such a long time between posts as I am in the throes of "re-organizing"!   Gosh where does all the stuff that clutters every spot come from? Anyways - I think its a good idea to use January as 'the' month to de-clutter esp. here in the wintery North.  Not much fun outside anyways, right?

But there is fun in our craft corners - and I tried a little technique with this card, so I'm here to share!

I received a card in the summer which embodied a colourful personality - and it really made me feel great, all sun-shiny and happy!

Upon close inspection, the card involved no less than 3 patterns of cardstock. Very busy and different patterns!  Layered together as a "strip" or band against a soothing backdrop of a solid colour. The focal point - a 3D flower sat on top, slightly off-center. And all made sense together! WONDERFUL!

So: busy patterns layered together, soothing backdrop and a dimensional focal point! Voila!

Now I tried it, here it is - my Valentine's Card for a friend ( can't say who cuz they haven't received it yet!)

Colourful Patterned Band
As you can see, I made my strip from 3 patterns!  I chose the patterns from a co-ordinating collection, but as long as they share something in common in colours, you should be good!

Combining Patterns is easy if you follow a few guidelines:
      - try 3 similar patterns - for example, all florals or all dots;
      - or a 'combo' of one or two similar motifs (ex: flowers) with a graphic element (i.e. plaid);
      - vary the sizes (tiny print, medium print and large print),

....I used a large plaid, with 2 floral motifs [ one a small print and the other a mostly larger print].  But they all shared  similar colours!

Soothing Backdrop
My background is a soft pink framed with a bit of vanilla - and I have added texture {Stampin' Up's Elegant Bouquet Embossing Folder] by running the cardstock through my Big Shot - but over-all, its pretty much a large dose of a soothing backdrop to support the busier elements in front.

Focal Point
I punched out 3 hearts in a glittered cardstock - and embellished them with buttons.  I love adding buttons - for such a small investment, they add a lot of 'punch' - lol!

One problem emerged - my card was 'front heavy' and in danger of falling forward on its face!  To counter-balance this, I added a layer of cardstock to the back as well, and an embellishment. This weighed the problem out, as you can see here....

back of card

So there you have it - I think it turned out swell and the reaction from my daughter was great when she saw it! Unfortunately the picture doesn't do justice to the lovely colours - but I believed I achieved that zipitty-do-dah look I was after!

TRY IT YOURSELF - its great to use up lovely bits of left-over cardstock!

Thanks for swinging by!

A simple 'Flower Window Box' card
Wednesday, June 2, 2010 @ 4:33 PM 0 comments!

Good evening!

Here is a simple card I've made for my Aunt Elsie today. I haven't mentioned her before but she is 96! And just now is having to go into a retirement home, she has gone this far all by herself with the help of her other neice who lives near her - but I am sooooo proud of her.  She's always been there for me since I was a wee grasshopper (I am from Saskatchewan, lol)....so I owe her a lot! She is also the last of 3 sisters and 1 brother, so I hope I can brighten her day a little with this:

I actually made it while having coffee at Tim Horton's today - so I could purchase my coffee for their TH Camp Day.  Too bad the weather went sour afterwards - those camps are really nice ones, so I hope their campaign went well!

But I simply made a couple of quick stamps with my stamp, and then placed a border stamp onto a scrap of paper which I cut out to make my 'window box' shape.

The idea is to keep the colours straight and simple, and then add a couple of trendy bits such as the Vintage Voque border stamp, and our Scallop Trim Border Punch.

That is also one of the buttons from our embellishments section. Even 1 button can make a difference!

*******

Off to make something else!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL YOU HAPPY SCRAPPERS!
Sunday, February 14, 2010 @ 2:19 PM 1 comments!

...OR NOT - Happy Valentine's to anyone visiiting today!  Hope you are having a lovely day!

WE are quietly enjoying 'normal' as a week of mid-term mania and illness has passed - and I finished one huge important task, so laid-back normal is kinda good!  I am going to make my famous brownies soon and then a nice chicken dinner after we play some monopoly and then a trip to the treadmill later on just to even things out a bit - :)

Did we make each other Valentine cards?  No. Is that kinda queer in a house full of card supplies? Probably 'yes'.  But I have been more focused on some scrapbooking, and just exploring some of my new goodies and I have something I'd love to share with you...remember the teaser in the previous post?  Well, heeeere it is!  It's Alex's first baby photo!  Hurray - I say that because its been in storage for 22 years!!!  Ain't that something?  SO any photo came come out to say 'hello' any ol' time as you can see here!

Let 'er rip! Stamping
First things first - I made the pages earlier before I knew I'd pair it with this photo I just grabbed some VERY VANILLA cardstock to begin the process.  And look, the previous post makes my point - take some stamps and just let loose!  That's all I did!  There was no plan at all - it was what we call in artisitic terms 'a very organic experience' .

I used different stamps from different sets, and combined colours I thought would go well together, but there was NO DIRECTION until I stamped the letters - then all I did was aim for a 'fairly' straight line but even then, a little un-eveness looks great.  When I was done, I had two pages, the first one shown here is using our alphabet stamp set Lovely Letters - and for some reason unfathomable to me now, I made an 'W' on the end of "SWEET"...??? Who knows what brilliant idea I had at the time, but I made 'sweet history' of it by covering the odd W with a punched out heart ( Heart Punch) and problem solved.

And on the other page I left a lot of room for my journalling.  I don't always know what I am doing with these pages if I design them first without photos, so it only makes sense to leave at least one area bare. Its easier to go back and add more later if you want to. I also ripped the top of the page off, and added another 'ripped' strip of PRETTY IN PINK cardstock - and it works on both front and back of the page, that's the beauty of un-even edges, or tearing techniques! :) {showing 'backside'}

In the end, I loved both pages!

Now it was time to find some photo worthy of my pages - and looking to my baby albums, I found our first photo of baby Alex, you know, the one they take at the hospital. Our hospital is gone now, made way for a new health center, so I guess it has more significance.  Anyways, we had a near disastrous delivery and our  poor baby was delivered dramatically and as a result was paralyzed down one side, and I never held her right away because a team of 4 came bursting through, grabbed her and whisked her away - and thankfully solved the paralyzation problem. But the poor pumpkin had a fractured shoulder and collarbone and a sore head I image from the forceps used to deliver her last minute , which is why she doesn't sit up straight and look too happy. But she was a trooper and we were even more blessed after such a difficult delivery to have her healthy after all. So this photo goes in the album with pride!

PAGE ACCENTS

I used our Heart Punch a lot to make accents, especially for tumbling some hearts together in a stack!  i only glued the pointed tips of the hearts making a place to tuck the next heart or other item like a note, in the top part - treat it like a "pocket".

Eventually I will be making  more journalling but I decided to start with her birth announcement information, and used my own hand and tried to imitate the scrolled letters in the word, Wonderful, as my inspiration. You only have to try - not be exact - and the results will be pretty good!

TIP - for preservation methods - write in pencil. I  then "copy over the pencil " in whatever medium I like, here I used a journalling pen in pink ink overtop of the pencil. Reason is that pencil will remain for ever - whereas every pen ink we generally have access to - even 'permanent' inks - fade. They might remain but look yellow over time but pencil endurs. That is why I use it as a "base" for more decorative treatment.  Trust me - as a former Art Conservator, I used to run experiments testing for the fastness or stability of black pens on the market, ones even marked 'Archival' - and through means of speeding up the results, they all altered their appearance. OK, enough of that!

I made a small accent using our Stampin' Up! product 'Build-A-Brad' ....see the small word "My", and then I added lovely grosgrain ribbon in pink/white stripe to really emphasize the photo. Another tie in with that is added under one of the journalling lines. Just a tad bit of ribbon, no biggy, but it is enough to add some ooomph! I used ordianry cross-stitch floss.

I measured the folds into a pattern - make your own pattern, it all works. If you want to crease the edges with an iron while working, or tack the pattern in place with pins - go for it. I used my bone folder, and some of the floss to tack the ribbon in the back before adding a small tie in the front of each folded 'bow' .  This is the only bit of aggravating piece of work - but its nice to do, and you will be glad you did!!!

So finally - its done and in its new home in my new red linen album!

Thanks for joining in!
Cheers,
Beverly

NEW FREE Stampin' Up! PUNCHES! FREE PAPERS! Life is 'tweet'!
Tuesday, February 2, 2010 @ 12:40 PM 0 comments!

Hey - hello to all!  Time is just flying around here and its Tuesday already which means it's my blog time! :)

My daughter and I made these cards not long ago, and in fact, I have a special person in mind to give one of them to tomorrow.  We know lots of winter 'baby' folks, { including myself since it is officially February - and my birthday is looming!}.  But - a friend of mine, a great fella, HILTON turned 76 just a little while ago, and so I will present this card to him.  Its really a good card as the paper colours and birdcage are not overly feminine and lots of men enjoy birds - so all is good!

CARD DESIGN
Its a really simple card - layering, and multi-dimensional dots to boost the focal point of the birdcage up. Elements of repetition are at work to balance the design well....see, the stripes of the paper echo the straight lines of the birdcage while the circular shape of the scallop trim is repeated in the circles visible on the paper, and the roof of the birdcage. All the colours are made to co-ordinate, and the layered borders around the birdcage helps to make all the colours 'pop'.  A bit of ribbon finishes the whole effect!

CARD SUPPLIES

The card is featuring more of the papers you can find in the Sweet Pea Designer Series Stack - there's plenty to satisfy any taste in this offering: 48 sheets, double-sided and the colours range from soft pinks, vanillas, blues and greens to deeper hues of brown, rose, teal, greens, etc. There are graphic designs {stripes, circles, dots, etc.} and cutesy trees and flowers and elegant butterflies - very versatile.

AND check out one of the new punches!  This is available in both a border and a corner punch - so cool that we have come so far in just a few years that we all can make gorgeous designs with the tools at our fingertips!  The punch is: SCALLOP TRIM BORDER - and its FREE, FREE, FREE - with Sale-A-Bration!  WHooo-hoo - AND the matching SCALLOP TRIM CORNER PUNCH is available as a separate purchase - so you can use it towards your $65 purchase to enable you to take the border punch home free.

The stamp set for the bird in the cage is.....FREE!  LOL - more goodies from the SAB cataloque...this is a different stamp from the same set, HAPPY MOMENTS, which was featured in the previous post.
*Ribbon = regular Stampin Up! IDEA Cataloque

Christmas Baroque Motifs and Ornament Punch
Tuesday, November 3, 2009 @ 6:26 PM 1 comments!

The Baroque Motifs stamp set is a very, very popular one - very!  And so is our new Delightful Decorations & Ornament Punch featured in our Holiday Mini Cataloque.  So I guess it was only a matter of time before the two came together.  One version is the first one I am showing here - with the large swirly motif paired with one ornament and a nice band of patterned paper/ribbon to top it off.

Afterwards, I wanted to make my very own version - remember how I have mentioned before about taking inspiration and making it your own? .....well, I 'softened' the look. And I was after a more romantic-antique look - something my 95 yr old Aunt would love.

By applying white craft ink over top of the stamped images, {use sponges}the colours become subdued and I think very pretty.  Then instead of a ribbon & paper band, I put 3 scalloped ovals across the top choosing to add ribbon to the ornaments {twist the ribbon into tiny knots for a different look}. This one is definitely going to my Aunt Elsie!

Well, you can see the comparison.  Both are very nice. But it goes to show you can take the same 'motif' and create very different outcomes by mixing up your technique.

Try it yourself with a stamp set you have - find a "new style" for a card you've created!

Contact me for class information if you'd like to learn how to make these cards.

Look Who's Turning Stamp Set - Baby Card
Wednesday, August 12, 2009 @ 2:34 AM 0 comments!

Here's my first real card using my "Look Who's Turning" stamp set as I mentioned in my last post....and my idea to put my Big Shot 'Bigz Scalloped Circle' came about because we were using it this past week-end {showing that post later - stay tuned!}.......and I think I came up with a pleasant idea of making different sized scalloped circles turn into the beginnings of a "baby rattle"!

I cut 4 scalloped circles - 2 large on my Big Shot, and then used a hand-held punch to cut out a smaller circle from the center of one of the big circles. Then the fourth was an even smaller scalloped circle cut from white cardstock. I used a hidden cardstock ring to raise the front of the card a bit. Hope that all made sense - lol

Using various shades of pink ink, I stamped my adorable octopus on Stampin' Up!'s Whisper White cardstock and then used their Large Scallop Oval to punch it out. Before layering it on, I used a hint of ink to create a pink shadow.

A strip of cardstock, another circle - and a few added images to the bottom, and my greeting and I was done. This took about 15 mins. Pretty good I'd say!

Hope you enjoy it!

Lace and Black Glitter Card
Sunday, July 12, 2009 @ 5:33 AM 1 comments!

Good Morning! To all you happy souls this Sunday :)

Along with my recent new supplies - I received a free Hostess Level 1 stamp set from SU, Dear Friend. Ever wonder at first you're not sure if you'd be over the moon for a stamp set - same here but now I love it!

I stamped it simply in black ink onto a previously punched scallop circle that was laying about in my scraps. Changed my mind to colour it with markers. And since I have my black glitter out from the other day - it now boasts a black glitter border!

Next, another scrap scallop and finally, a scrap piece of copper shimmer paper - and my NEW CIRCLE SCALLOP BIGZ DIE! Uh-hum, its my newest, next-great-toy !!! And believe me, I have been punching out these large scalloped circles like there is no tomorrow, (she says gleefully!)........and well, I just kept going through my scraps and before you know it -the basics were all there. Now more fun - embellishments! Yum!
My leaf is merely a scrap (this is obviously 'scrap-day' ...LOL)...folded in half, run through a crimper and cut into a leaf shape. That's a good trick if you don't have a large leaf in a die-cut.

I grabbed some lovely pale green gems and gave the largest circle the treatment - and when it came to deciding on some ribbon - I delved into my stash and found this ribbon again - beckoning to be used (this was a great deal - from of all places, a garage sale) - AND - I opted to layout things where dead center was not entirely going to steal the day - so my final placement was to go a tiny bit off-center. So far - so good.

My last decision came also "on the fly" when a straight strip of black cardstock was given the scallop look by using my new "slit" punch. Simple but a nice look - and so I tucked in my greeting on the opposite side to add more balance to the whole piece.

I hope you like it.

Celebrating Life, Simple to Exotic Cards and Notecards ....
Saturday, July 4, 2009 @ 9:01 AM 1 comments!

I have been toodling around today with the theme of celebrating Life and lovely notes to send to friends. Its always delightful to receive mail no matter how much email one resorts to! So here they are......

...my inspiration is the first card shown: a 'folded' card I saw on SplitCoastStampers (SCS) by talented card artist named Beate Johns. The card was just wonderful - and I wanted to try my hand at.....hers is much fancier but mine is not too bad I think...to me it has a bohemian quality - all I did was find colours and patterns I could swizzle together - I may even add some pearls later! Aaaah, my photos are not the best - sorry but I think my camera is "slowing" down! {it's not me!}.

Our heart stamps are different, but that doesn't matter - one does with what one has :) I stamped my heart in Versamark and then coated it with glitter. Oh, and I inked the paper with some soft pink before stamping the heart image in a darker ink. One could just go on and on with this card!
Wouldn't this card be a fun one to receive - can't you just see making an unusual custom envelope - thin and long? When they open it - out it folds!
Cheers!

Oval All Mix and Match
Friday, June 12, 2009 @ 10:54 PM 0 comments!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to any new viewers that were at Johann's party! So glad you've dropped by! Have a look around!

To see a Stampin' Up! catalog - click on the Stampin' Up! sign over to the left side - you will go to a new location where you can see the products, new projects and learn about promotions and my classes, etc.

If you were interested in learning more about the box I demonstrated to store the note cards we made, then see directly below.

OVAL ALL Mix and Match Box Set.

Here is a downloadable class demonstrating the box and note cards set using the Oval All Stamp Set, Oval and Scalloped Oval co-ordinating punches.

Click for class instructions/photos HERE

Betty Traciak is responsible for this class and ultimately became the Winner in the category for submitting ideas for SU's Occasions Mini Catalog where you can buy the Scalloped Oval, Large Oval punch and the Oval All Stamp Set - her class sure has become a popular choice for good reason!

Note - Beverly's Version!

Here are my dimensions for creating the BOX outlined in the Oval All Mix and Match Class. To fit my cards in the dividers easier, I found I wanted a slightly LARGER BOX than the original dimensions cited in the class, so substitue the following measurements for box, box lid and the dividers and then continue to follow the rest of the instructions:
(in inches...)
Box = cut a 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch. square of cardstock. Score all four sides at 1 1/4 in.
Box Lid = cut a 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 inch. square of cardstock. Score all four sides at 3/4 in.
Dividers (partitions):
larger#1 divider = cut cardstock 5 7/8 x 7 7/8 in. Score at 1, 2 and 3 in. Fold.
smaller #2 divider = cut cardstock 1 x 8 in. Score at 3, 4 and 5 in. Fold.

Love You Much Swap-style Mini-Project
Monday, March 23, 2009 @ 4:19 PM 0 comments!

Playing around with my Stampin' Up! "Love You Much" Stamp set - again!!
I was interested in putting a "swap" style little somethin' together - something a little different than what I am used to these days. Originally, these babies should of made it to Hawaii when my upline Caroline left the other day to attend Stampin' Up!'s big Incentive Trip for all thos 'High Earners" - {darn! I'll make it one year soon!}....but unfortunately, I didn't make it in time to give them to her. So I'll save these for another time.
Also, I wanted to be slightly different than an ATC - or Artist Trading Card for you who may not have heard of them....because I have made a ton of ATC's in the past. So for that reason, my mind came up with these - and I really like them! I think I could just hand them to someone as a sort of friendly "hi - you're neat" or just as the back says: "friend to friend".

Pink and Orange are always one of my favourite combo's - especially either with a distressed look or especially tropical look! So I chose cardstock in this catalog's IN COLOR's 'Pink Pirouette' to start.
I made some 'blanks' and cut them into 'frames'. Next I edged them with colour in 'Pink Passion' and another in 'Pumpkin Pie'. For the 'inserts': I used 'Whisper White' paper and stamped my images on its front, - I used the masking technique to arrange the small dotted background {only stamp from the "Polka Dots and Paisley" set}. I then did the back choosing a sentiment, 'friend to friend'. One thing I did while stamping the birds - I used markers instead which gave me control over the placement of color - notice the wings are part chocolate and part pink! After stamping the dotted background on an ink pad, I went over top of a few select areas with the pink marker as well. I 'huffed' on the stamp both times to make sure the ink was nice and ready to stamp with. One good even press onto paper - excellent! I inserted the finished ones between two frames.
Before gluing the frames together, I wound a bit of off-white floss around the front frame, and a short piece of ribbon. I purposely chose SU!'s red/white striped grosgrain ribbon because otherwise - too much pink, and we can't have that! I flipped a piece of ribbon back and first tried to staple it into position, but ended up tacking it with some thread. The second one I did I totally skipped the staple - maybe you might like to staple it - experiment!

Lastly, I added some more 'embellishments' - I chose to use some 'chocolate' color and turned to my stash of " Bella Rose " Designer Papers - they're so delicious that I have used these papers to decorate through out my home, especially last Christmas! {my house has the same green in it and I love - love- love polka dots}..............ANYways, I wanted to add something else, so taking my paper, I then brought out my 'ROUND TAB Punch' and made the tab and put a little brad in it for interest, and a few hearts were punched out with the HEART to HEART Punch and sprinkled around.

Voila! I am making a few of these - they could also be little recipe cards or filing cards too - so maybe I will think of using them for one of those purposes next - I do have a new office/craft room in the works, so who knows!
But make some for your own reasons! Have fun :)
